Florida Chemical Company Founder Bert Schulz Chosen for Florida Citrus Hall of Fame
February, 2007 — Florida Chemical Company founder and long-time president Bert Schulz has been chosen for the Florida Citrus Hall of Fame and will be inducted into the prestigious group in February at the Florida citrus industry’s annual Government Day Luncheon. He was instrumental in development of the technology that today is used to extract citrus peel oil from the fruit during the juice manufacturing process.
Henry E. “Bert” Schulz and his father W. H. Schulz, Jr. started Florida Molasses in 1942. After World War II, the Schulz family renamed the business Florida Chemical Company and began to focus on d-Limonene – the major component of the oil extracted from citrus rind. Bert would eventually become president of the business and continue to work to use the by-products from citrus processing to create other value added products.
Schulz is credited with creating the first large volume markets for d-Limonene, making the oil a valuable commodity to the citrus industry. Today, the company is the leading supplier of d-Limonene with customers all over the world. Florida Chemical offers over one hundred citrus related products. These citrus-based cleaners have a broad range of applications and are used for cleaning in household applications and in many different industries including automotive, manufacturing, recycling, water treatment, marine, and medical/pharmaceutical.
The Schulz family was honored with this recognition and his selection. Immediate past president of the company Paul Schulz, Bert’s son, said, “This is a great honor for my father and well-deserved. He worked so hard to lay the foundation for this company that today employs 40 people and offers clean, green products to customers all over the globe.”
The Florida Citrus Hall of Fame seeks to honor those who have given unselfishly of their time and efforts in the Florida Citrus Industry since 1962.
Send congratulations and greetings to Bert Schulz via Florida Chemical Company at info@floridachemical.com.

California Freeze Could Affect Florida Citrus
January 19, 2007 — This week in California, that state’s citrus industry experienced a devastating freeze that has significantly impacted this year’s citrus crop. The temperatures in the California’s Central Valley fell to mid-20’s or below for five consecutive nights. The California citrus industry produces about 25% of the US orange crop. The recent freeze destroyed an estimated 75% of California’s citrus, with losses estimated at more than $1 billion.
Citrus economists in Florida believe the crop losses in California will have a significant impact on Florida. Since most of the California crop goes to the fresh fruit market, Florida growers could see increased demand for fresh fruit. Most likely, growers will move some of their processed fruit into the fresh fruit market. This would result in less fruit available for juicing and lower orange oil (d-limonene) production. Experts are projecting higher fruit prices as a result of reduced supply in California and Florida.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has already issued a very low forecast for the 2006-07 Florida citrus crop season (140 million boxes). This citrus crop estimate is down significantly from last year’s crop and, if the projections hold, it will result in the lowest Florida citrus crop produced since the 1991-92 season.

USDA Releases 2006-2007 Crop Forecast
October, 2006 — The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), through their National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released their forecast for the Florida orange crop on October 12, 2006. The all orange forecast is 135 million boxes, nine percent lower than the final crop numbers posted last year.
The USDA calculated this estimate based on their review of tree inventories, fruit counts, and fruit measurements made by NASS. The NASS report stated, “The average fruit per tree, from the summer limb count survey, is the lowest on record for Valencia and midseason oranges reflecting the light bloom period in the spring of the year.” At the press conference to release the data, Bob Terry, a statistician with the NASS Orlando field office stated that the decline was due to the continuing recovery from the hurricanes and a cold snap in February, 2006, when the citrus trees were beginning to bloom.
The smaller crop estimate is expected to have an impact on juice and citrus oil prices.
